Cedefop and UNESCO-UNEVOC Release Practical Guide to Address Skill Needs for the Green Transition

The European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), in collaboration with UNESCO-UNEVOC, has published a new guide titled «Meeting Skill Needs for the Green Transition: Skills Anticipation and VET for a Greener Future.» This publication, the fourth in Cedefop’s series of practical skills anticipation guides, emphasizes the critical role of vocational education and training (VET) in fostering a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy.

As the European Union intensifies its efforts to achieve climate neutrality, the demand for green skills is rapidly increasing. Cedefop’s report highlights that VET systems must adapt to these evolving needs by integrating environmental sustainability into curricula and training programs. This integration is essential to prepare individuals for new roles in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable resource management.

The guide underscores the importance of robust skills intelligence and effective governance in facilitating the green transition. It illustrates how VET can contribute practically by promoting apprenticeships, upskilling, reskilling, validation, and microcredentials, all aimed at building a workforce equipped for a greener future. The publication also presents good practice examples from Europe and beyond, demonstrating the translation of green ambitions into actionable policy implementation.

The report also addresses the importance of collaboration among policymakers, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders to identify and anticipate skill requirements. By fostering partnerships, VET programs can be tailored to meet the specific demands of the green economy, ensuring that the workforce remains competitive and capable of driving sustainable development.

This initiative aligns with Cedefop’s ongoing efforts to support the development and implementation of policies that anticipate and match skill needs, particularly in the context of the European Green Deal.
