New Good Practice Guide for Micro-credentials and Small Qualifications in Scotland Released

In August 2023, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Scotland unveiled a new Good Practice Guide for Micro-credentials and Small Qualifications, aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of tertiary education in Scotland. This guide, released through the Scottish Tertiary Education Network for Micro-credentials, outlines key principles and practices agreed upon by a diverse group of stakeholders.

Designed to support Scottish tertiary education providers and other credit-rating bodies, the guide offers a comprehensive framework for the development and implementation of micro-credentials. It aims to ensure that these qualifications meet high standards, ultimately improving learner take-up and mobility across the country.

Micro-credentials and small qualifications are increasingly recognized for their role in providing flexible, targeted educational opportunities. They are particularly valuable for upskilling or reskilling individuals, whether for career advancement or re-entering the workforce. By adhering to the guide’s baseline principles and good practices, educational institutions can enhance the effectiveness and credibility of these qualifications.

The new guidance is expected to play a crucial role in fostering confidence among learners and employers, ensuring that micro-credentials are both well-designed and aligned with learner needs.
